Sometimes we just aren’t ready to say our goodbyes to warm weather and blue skies…
Yellow school buses start to appear on your morning commute, pumpkin-spice is everywhere, and it gets dark just a little bit earlier. While these might be the telltale signs that summer is coming to an end, there’s still plenty of sunshine left. Take the whole family on one last summer adventure.
Fall might be around the corner, but don’t write summer off just yet.
Get outside for some late-summer sun. There’s no better time to take that family hike you’ve been meaning to go on. Bushkill Falls has eight waterfalls, four hiking trails, a playground, and gift shops. Or pack a picnic and spend the whole day hiking, biking, and kayaking at Lackawanna State Park. Whether the family has been training all summer or its your first visit, challenge the kids to a round of mini-golf.
How about a little day trip? Everyone could benefit from one more ride on the Phoenix at Knoebels Amusement Resort. And beat the last of the summer heat at one of the area’s best waterparks. Have a wild time interacting with exotic animals at Claws “N” Paws Wild Animal Park. In the evening, make the most of the cooler air and snuggle up with snacks at a drive-in movie theatre.
While you might have slurped ice cream all summer long, challenge yourself to visit one new shop before the season ends. Come the end of September, the Bloomsburg Fair is home to all of the unique eats you’ve been dreaming of since last year. And no matter if you’re soaking up the last of summer or celebrating back-to-school season, head to a local winery or brewery and take your drink outside.
You Don’t Want to Miss:
The cool spray coming from the waterfalls will refresh you as you hike through this 300-acre park, called “The Niagara of Pennsylvania.” Make sure to pack sneakers, a few bottles of water, and your camera for the incredible views. After the hike, snack on an ice cream, shop in the gift shop, or take the kids gem mining.
Lackawanna State Park
Before the leaves begin to change, head to this gorgeous state park and take in the greenery. Take a hike along one of the trails that loop around Lackawanna Lake, or set up a picnic along the shore. No matter if you want to swim, fish, bike, hike, canoe, horseback ride, or just sit back and relax, this peaceful park has something for everyone.

There’s nothing quite like watching the sun set as you impatiently wait for your movie to start at a drive-in movie theater. Few other activities truly capture the magic of a summer evening like sprawling out on the grass with snacks and blankets to catch the latest summer blockbuster on the big screen. NEPA is lucky enough to have three classic drive-in movie theaters that feature a bit of nostalgia and a bunch of summer fun.
Treat the Family to Ice Cream
NEPA has so many delicious ice cream shops, parlors, stores, stands, and trucks, you’d have a permanent brain freeze if you attempted to try them all. Make another visit to your favorite frozen treat destination, or test out a new shop that you’ve always wanted to try. A few scoops of ice cream put the finishing touch on a perfect summer day.
