Big Brown Fish & Pay Lakes | Family-friendly fishing fun in Effort

Big Brown Fish & Pay Lakes in Effort offers a relaxing fishing experience for visitors of all ages. The ten-acre property features three stocked ponds filled with trout and bass raised onsite at their respected hatchery. Guests enjoy easy fishing with open shorelines, clear casting space and plenty of benches. No fishing license is required, and the team provides poles, worms and lures for anyone who needs gear. Fish are responsibly raised, typically ranging from 12 to over 18 inches, with larger trout appearing throughout the season. Staff also clean and fillet each catch, making every visit simple and enjoyable.

Fishing Experience

The ponds are stocked with rainbow trout, golden rainbow trout, brook trout, brown trout and largemouth bass. Trout are stocked weekly from March through November, and bass are added monthly from spring through late summer. First-time anglers and seasoned visitors appreciate the easy access, steady action and peaceful setting. Many families return each year to enjoy a laid-back day outdoors.

The Big Brown Fish Hatchery

The hatchery began in 1971 as a small project by founder Charles A. Conklin II. It grew into a major operation supplying trout, bass and hybrid bluegill across the region. The hatchery now produces hundreds of thousands of pounds of fish annually. A portion of that stock supports the pay lakes, ensuring consistent quality throughout the season. The name honors “Big Brown,” a memorable trout from Conklin’s early days. That spirit of care still guides the team today.

Big Brown Fish & Pay Lakes in Effort delivers an easy, welcoming and memorable fishing experience.
