NEPA Seasons
From cool spring hikes and warm summer nights to brisk fall mornings and pink winter sunsets, every season welcomes a new reason to love Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Spring
-
Valley Communities
Average Temperature: 42°/60°
A typical temperature swing from Early March to early April brings warmer weather and measurable precipitation to the Valley Communities. Frost subsides. Grasses and hearty perennials make a quick comeback. Earlier sunrises welcome morning walks and the temperature change from early spring into May marks one of the region’s most drastic transitions.
-
Pocono Mountains
Average Temperature: 35°/55°
Change sweeps over the Pocono Mountains during the spring. March starts out quite cold with average temperatures in the mid to high 30s. Temperatures warm rapidly as April and May approach. There is considerable rainfall throughout late spring. By the end of May and early June, average temperatures settle into the mid-50s to high 60s.
-
Endless Mountains
Average Temperature: 40°/57°
The Endless Mountains experience most of their precipitation throughout spring. Winter often attempts to keep its grip on the region well through March. Many of the predominantly agricultural communities, however begin planting toward mid-April. By May, the high elevation winds have subsided and the average temperatures stabilize near the 60s.
Summer
-
Valley Communities
Average Temperature: 63°/80°
Comfortably warm air temperatures settle into the Valley Communities throughout the summer. Longer days help to fend off cold night time air dropping into the low elevations. Early June evenings, however, can reach surprisingly low temperatures. Moderate precipitation spikes through June and July, and nights become temperate throughout the end of summer.
-
Pocono Mountains
Average Temperature: 60°/75°
Hot, humid summers are common for the Pocono Mountains. June, July and August often witness average temperatures in the mid to high 70s with occasional stretches in the upper 80s. Spring precipitation carries over into the summer, though with less frequency. Clear, blue skies are a common summer sight in the Pocono Mountains.
-
Endless Mountains
Average Temperature: 60°/80°
The rural, highland landscape of the Endless Mountains lends itself to an abundance of bright, clear summer days. An average of less than 40% chance of daily precipitation leaves plenty of opportunity for outdoor recreation. Average highs in the low 80s coupled with mild humidity make for consistently comfortable summers.
Fall
-
Valley Communities
Average Temperature: 47°/64°
Warm days continue from September through mid-October in the Valley Communities. Clearer skies, plenty of sun and rapidly falling humidity make for optimal foliage viewing. Winter winds begin to arrive in early November bringing with them much cooler nights. Bright, late autumn sun paired with increasingly earlier sunsets welcome that quintessential crispness of a fall evening in NEPA.
-
Pocono Mountains
Average Temperature: 40°/60°
Moderately warm days and crisp clear nights are a standard for fall in the Pocono Mountains. Summer humidity begins to wane by mid-September. Nights become increasingly cooler toward late October and early November. Average precipitation also begins to fall slightly and, of course, that famous NEPA foliage takes center stage.
-
Endless Mountains
Average Temperature: 45°/60°
Comfortable summer leads into a temperate early fall for the Endless Mountains. Much of September sees highs in the 60s and noticeably less precipitation. October brings cooler nights and stunning autumn landscapes. By November, clear, sunny days have begun giving way to mild early winter weather, wind and clouds.
Winter
-
Valley Communities
Average Temperature: 26°/38°
December starts off quite mild in the Valley Communities with average highs in the low 40s. Winter shows up, however, by the middle of the month and with it the first measurable snowfalls. Unless you’re a skier, January’s low temperatures and windchill often keep us indoors. Snow events are common, though less frequent than in the higher elevations.
-
Pocono Mountains
Average Temperature: 22°/33°
The elevation of the Pocono Mountains translates to colder, snowier winters. Once regular snowfall begins in mid to late December, much of the higher elevations experience a daily measurable snow cover. Average temperatures drop significantly toward late January. Though at times harsh and cold, Pocono winters provide optimal conditions for one of the most popular winter sports destinations in the country.
-
Endless Mountains
Average Temperature: 25°/35°
The largely rural landscape and a slightly better than average chance for snow cover offers spectacular winter views. Higher elevation and windchills occasionally dip temperatures into the teens. Mid-winter months offer ideal skiing and snowmobiling weather and quaint snow-covered towns dot the pastoral landscape.
