Mission Statement

In the Catholic tradition and the spirit of our patron, St. Francis of Assisi, the hungry are fed in collaboration with volunteers and donors from all faith communities. The kitchen provides a free, hot, nutritious meal to all our guests every day of the year. Staff and volunteers strive to be of assistance to others and serve with a spirit of compassion, respect and dignity.

St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen is a nonprofit soup kitchen in Scranton that was founded in 1978. Lunch is served seven days a week from 11-12, and dinner is served Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5-6. They rely heavily on food and monetary donations.

For patrons looking to take food home, there is a Client Choice Food Pantry available three days a week. Additionally, the kitchen is also home to a free clothing store. It is open three days a week and takes clothing donations year-round.

As well as donations, volunteers keep the organization running. Volunteers can be of weekly help in the kitchen and with serving, in the clothing store, and in the food pantry. Enthusiastic individuals and groups can take volunteering to the next level by being Host for the Day and sponsor that day’s meals.
