Mission Statement

The Osterhout Free Library provides materials and services to all residents of Luzerne County enabling them to obtain information, free of charge, for their personal, educational, recreational and professional needs. Our mission is to continue to broaden these services and to stimulate their use.

The Osterhout Free Library in downtown Wilkes-Barre has been educating and entertaining the community since 1887. As a member of the Luzerne County Library System, they provide free materials and services for residents of the county. In addition to the central library, they also operate branches in South Wilkes-Barre, North Wilkes-Barre and Plains.

A library card provides access to the library’s extensive collection of books, DVDs and other materials. They also have computers for public use.

The library frequently hosts programs for all ages. Children will love the storytime sessions and family movie nights, while older kids can hang out during weekly teen night activities. For adults, the library offers art and hobby clubs, book discussions and other events.
