Mission Statement

The mission of the Luzerne County Historical Society is to preserve and promote the collective history and heritage of Luzerne County, PA.

Founded in 1858, the Luzerne County Historical Society is the oldest county historical society in Pennsylvania. This nonprofit hosts exhibits, events, lectures and tours that connect the community with the area’s rich past.

The Luzerne County Historical Society maintains a museum and a library in downtown Wilkes-Barre. Their collections include over 200,000 documents, objects and published works related to the county. From Native American artifacts to the Revolutionary War era to items from the coal mining days, they provide a comprehensive look at the county’s history and heritage.

The Luzerne County Historical Society also owns and maintains two historic homes: the Nathan Denison House in Forty Fort and the Swetland Homestead in Wyoming.
