Mission Statement

The Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour maintains a historic anthracite coal mine and educates visitors about NEPA’s rich industrial past.

Located in Scranton’s McDade Park, the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour brings history to life. This educational tour takes visitors 300 feet below the surface into the depths of a real anthracite coal mine. Tour guides lead guests through a day in the life of a coal miner and explain the mining process.

The Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour plays a key role in preserving NEPA’s industrial past. They maintain the 160-year-old mine, ensuring that future generations will be able to learn about the area’s rich history. The tour even gained national recognition when USA Today named it one of America’s Best Underground Attractions.

Support the mine by taking a tour or becoming a volunteer.
