You Know… Just Hanging Out With Thousands of Bees on a Friday…
The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort in Shawnee on the Delaware takes sustainability seriously. As does DiscoverNEPA. So, when they invited us down to their gorgeous Poconos resort for a tour of their 25,000 square-foot Shawnee Island Farm, we were all in. Then, when they said we’d be spending most of that time in the apiary with thousands of bees, we were like Wuuuuuuuut? But it was too late.
Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Shawnee runs their popular Apiary Tours. That’s right – a bunch of people willingly milling about some beehives on an island. What could possibly go wrong? The tours include sweet golf cart rides and the opportunity to get up close and personal with the bees. They’re actually harmless and kind of adorable in a strange way. Oh, and at the end of it all, you get to sample ShawneeCraft Brewing Company’s Apiarius. That’s their delicious pale ale brewed with honey produced right there in the apiary.
The tour will cost you $50. They set off at 5 p.m. And, of course, you have to be 21 or over. You’ll learn something. You’ll get out in nature for a bit of fresh air. Perhaps, you’ll make some inroads into the bee world and they’ll accept you and vow to never again bother you, who knows? And you get to try some tasty beer. All in all, it’s a unique and fun excursion. And you can spin the whole thing into a story about surviving Bee Island, or something like that.
We stopped by for Shawnee’s one-of-a-kind, and surprisingly fun Apiary Tour on Friday evening. And we brought our camera along. Take a look.
