Explore the Rails & Trails Outside Jim Thorpe
Between the mighty Lehigh River and the rolling mountains, the Lehigh Gorge boasts some of the most famous views in the Poconos. One of the best ways to see the sights is with the ever-popular Bike Train. We hopped onboard and brought the camera along for the ride.
The morning starts in historic Jim Thorpe. We packed up our rental bike from Pocono Biking and boarded the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway for a 25-mile train ride along the river. The train dropped us off at the White Haven trailhead of the Lehigh Gorge Trail. Then, we had all afternoon to pedal back to Jim Thorpe (and take in the breathtaking scenery along the way).
The trail has a slight downgrade, which makes the 25-mile return trip glide by. Most people finish the ride in three to five hours, although you’ll definitely want to take your time, stop for a picnic and enjoy the views. Cool canal ruins, scenic overlooks, soaring railroad trestles and rushing waterfalls are right along the trail. And on summer days, you’ll probably spot whitewater rafters paddling through the rapids below.
Additional dates for the Bike Train are July 24 & 25, August 21 & 22, September 18 & 19 and November 13 & 14. You can bring your own bike or rent one.
Advance tickets/reservations are required. Call the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway directly at (570) 325-8485 to book your trip.
