Let’s Do Lunch: Sparkomatic Cafe & Talkhouse

An Eclectic and Vibrant Cafe in Milford

Sparkomatic Café & Talkhouse in Milford is that eclectic, small town coffee shop you’ll want to take all your friends to. The quirky exterior screams, “Come on in!” An adorable, hand-painted teddy bear cuddles the windows, and a cozy, colorful porch leads you to the entrance. The distinctive décor continues inside. Vivid colors contrast with the otherwise industrial space to create an artful sense of welcome. Splashy artwork lines the interior walls. Comfy, mismatched furniture evokes a subdued whimsy. And above all, the smiling, friendly faces leave you feeling right at home.

The Sparkomatic takes its name from the iconic car radio company born in Milford in the early 1950s. We chatted with Owner, David Barole and Assistant Manager, Natalie Menosky, about what makes Sparkomatic such a special spot in NEPA. Barole lives by the philosophy, “It’s our place. We’ll do what we want.” This is evident not only in Sparkomatic’s unconventional aesthetic, but most importantly in the diverse, wide-ranging menu. Each item, from the wraps to the soups to the salads, features a strong Mediterranean influence. And, no matter how their menu develops and changes, Sparkomatic’s focus on fresh, high-quality produce remains front and center.

There’s a staff mantra at Sparkomatic — “Come for the Coffee. Stay for the food.” So, naturally, we started with a few of their signature drinks. First, we opted for a little pick-me-up. The Espresso Matic is a shot of espresso and seltzer. Simple, yet undoubtedly effective. Feeling Fall? The Pumpkin Pie Chai is perfect for one of those chilly, early fall mornings (we had it in the afternoon, but honestly, it’s delicious any time).

On to the food. First, we tried a plate of hummus, veggies, and pita bread. We could’ve downed the hummus by the spoonful (Yes, it’s that good – don’t judge). Next, we went for the avocado toast. It came on rye accompanied by gorgeous, fresh tomatoes and a splash of locally sourced balsamic reduction from Milford’s own Ghiggeri’s. It was simple, fresh, bright and absolutely delicious. Quick note on portion size here – they use a whole avocado. Trust me, it’s a meal in itself. Finally, to top it all off we snuck in a Croissant Sandwich. Yeah. We know… not technically a “lunch” item. But if you’re throwing together a perfectly flaky, light croissant with fried egg, cheddar, avocado and spicy spark sauce, we’re about that all day. Happy to report – it exceeded our expectations. Honestly, that spark sauce takes it to another level.

Sparkomatic is located at 611 Broad St in Milford. If you join Sparkomatic’s reward program, you will get a cup of coffee on the house! Be sure to follow Sparkomatic on Instagram and Facebook to stay in the loop on monthly specials and menu changes.
