NEPA Can’t Get Enough of “The Legendary Taste”
The Harveys Lake location is a bit of a local landmark. Just the sight of the red shingled roof and the smell of fresh-baked dough is enough to bring back memories of summer days at the beach. The restaurant—which was originally called Joe’s Pizza—has been around since 1953, and even though they’ve grown over the years, the family recipe still traces its roots back to the lake. Locals swear by “the legendary taste,” so we took a ride out and tried it ourselves.
The original Grotto pizza is a round, thin-crust pie with a special cheddar blend and a signature swirl of tomato sauce on top. Classic cheese and pepperoni are still most people’s go-to toppings, but Grotto also makes specialty pizzas such as chicken wing and bacon chicken ranch.
Beyond the pizza, Grotto is also known for their wings. They have tons of sauces to choose from, like the spicy, new “Old Bay Hot” sauce. You also have to try the “Grand Slam” chicken wing dip made with Grotto’s signature wing sauce. The recipe’s a secret, but we can tell you that it includes an irresistible blend of hot sauce, bleu cheese and garlic butter.
Grotto offers healthy choices too, like the chopped Cobb salad topped with grilled chicken breast, bacon, bleu cheese crumbles, tomatoes, hard-boiled egg and red onions.
The food is definitely Grotto’s claim to fame, but the strong sense of community keeps customers coming back again and again. The restaurant often gives back with fundraisers like their annual Parade of Trees, a Christmas tree display that raises money for local nonprofits. Customers can vote for their favorite trees now through January 18.
