Let’s Do Lunch: Brooklyn Deli Grocery

A Taste of New York City in Scranton

For the past five months, Brooklyn Deli Grocery has been serving up mouth-watering sandwiches, subs, and empanadas in NEPA. This new hot spot brings a Brooklyn flair to South Scranton, and their food is a must-try!

Owner Jose Zorrilla is a Brooklyn native who just recently moved to Scranton with his family. We chatted with him about the big move, and how NEPA life is treating him. Zorrilla loves the community feel, and the affordability of the area compared to New York City. He also felt that Scranton, a place that is family-oriented and youthful, would be the best location to bring Brooklyn Deli to life. Zorrilla emphasized the passion he holds for his business, especially the unique dishes he creates for the menu. We had to check them out!

The two most popular items on the menu are the Empanadas and the Cuban Sandwich. The Empanadas are piping hot and stuffed with stringy mozzarella cheese and chicken. They exceeded our expectations, and were packed with flavor. We also tried the Cuban Sandwich which includes ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles and yellow mustard. The Cuban is perfect for sharing with a friend, or you can just keep it all for yourself. Trust us, leaving hungry after eating this sandwich is close to impossible!

As we made our way down the menu, we knew we couldn’t go wrong with the Chicken and Pesto Sub. Aside from the tasty grilled chicken and generous helping of pesto, the sandwich oozes with melted mozzarella. And a crisp, tangy tomato adds that undeniable spark of freshness. The ingredients blend perfectly together with every bite.

Zorrilla also made us two of Brooklyn Deli’s signature virgin Piña Coladas. One sip of this frozen delight, and you’ve been transported to an island paradise (believe me, it’s that good). The distinct and refreshing pineapple flavor is perfect for the final weeks of summer.

Brooklyn Deli is located on the South Side of Scranton at 401 Cedar Avenue. You can place your order to-go, or enjoy your food on the patio. Brooklyn Deli also offers delivery in Scranton for no additional fee.
