Many Local Races Are Going Virtual This Summer
It’s not the same as toeing up to the starting line, but virtual races are keeping the competitive spirit alive.
Even though many races are cancelled this season, you can still put your training to use by joining a virtual race. There are lots of nationwide challenges out there, but you’ll also find several NEPA-based races that are raising money for local causes.
So how does it work? Most virtual races give you a few days or weeks to complete the distance. You can run anywhere, anytime, all while keeping a safe social distance. Track your time and mileage on a running app and submit your results to see how you measure up.
You might not get the cheering spectators or the thrill of the starting gun, but these virtual races will help you stay connected with NEPA’s running community, even at a distance.
Super Hero Trilogy Virtual Race Series
May 1 – July 31
Instead of hosting their annual race, the MWS Race Team is holding the Super Hero Trilogy, a virtual race series consisting of a 1-mile sprint, 5K and 10K. Sign up for one race or all three. This year’s event benefits the Interfaith of Susquehanna County.
GCSOM Virtual 5K to Benefit COVID Relief
May 12 – June 15
The Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine Running Club is holding a virtual 5K with 100% of profits going toward coronavirus relief. The winner will get to choose the benefiting charity from a list of local and national causes.
Wilkes-Barre Virtual Run Series
July 1 – July 31
The inaugural Wilkes-Barre Half Marathon is pushed until next year, but the race organizers are still offering a virtual option to benefit the United Way of the Wyoming Valley. Distances include a 5K, 10K, half marathon, full marathon or 50K. Registration gets you into any or all races.
Bernie’s Run Virtual Race
July 3 – July 5
The Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA’s annual Bernie’s Run is usually a Fourth of July tradition. Run three miles over the holiday weekend and compete for gift cards to local businesses. Prizes will be awarded for the fastest times, most elevation gain and route farthest from the YMCA.
Pauly Friedman Virtual 5K Family Run/Walk
August 1 – August 5
The Pauly Friedman 5K is offering a virtual option instead of holding their in-person race. Record your miles to benefit the 211 Help Line and Family Service Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Some Races Are Still Going Live
As NEPA transitions into the yellow and green phases, some smaller-scale events are still continuing as planned—with some new rules. Some are using a time trial format to reduce crowds at the starting line, while others are limiting the amount of entrants to meet national and state guidelines. Each race has different safety procedures, so be sure to check before registering.
