Dunmore Cidery Celebrates Earth Day with Generous Commitment to Local Conservation Effort

Space Time Mead & Cider Works Devotes 1% of Annual Sales to Lackawanna River Conservation Association

Space Time joins the effort of 1% for the Planet, a global network of businesses, nonprofits and individuals engaged in promoting and supporting environmental causes.

In celebration of Earth Day 2021, Space Time Mead & Cider Works of Dunmore is doing their part to keep the Lackawanna River clean and usable for generations to come. The popular craft wine maker pledged 1% of its annual sales to the Lackawanna River Conservation Association. The gift reflects Space Time’s partnership with 1% for the Planet, and a mission to continually work toward improving our local environment.

Since opening in 2018, Space Time has set an example in its field as a local promoter of sustainable business practices. The cidery remains an advocate for sourcing local ingredients and recycling or reusing packaging materials. They even operate on 100% PA wind-generated electricity.

For Dan Schreffler, President of Space Time Mead & Cider Works, the commitment to LRCA was a matter of simple mission alignment. “When we started our winery, one of our core principles was to do what we could to protect our natural environment.” Schreffler continued, “We could think of no other local organization that has done so much for Lackawanna County’s quality of life by protecting and cleaning up the Lackawanna River and surrounding lands.”

Rarely is conservation a solo endeavor.

For its part, the Lackawanna River Conservation Association hopes to remain a faithful steward of Pennsylvania’s 2020 River of the Year. Since 1987, the nonprofit has worked tirelessly to protect the 350 square-mile Lackawanna watershed. LRCA’s Executive Director, Bernie McGurl notes that, for conservation efforts like theirs, sustainable funding is often a challenge. “Having a dedicated fund like 1% for the Planet and a local business, like Space Time Mead & Cider Works reach out to us can be a real game changer to help advance our mission in the Lackawanna Watershed.” He adds, “We look to their example as an encouragement to other local businesses to join with them in supporting 1% for the Planet and the LRCA.”

This Earth Day, consider your commitment to conservation. Become a member, volunteer or offer support to LRCA’s mission.
