Think all cemeteries are dreary and spooky? Think again!
Overlooking the scenic Schuylkill River, Laurel Hill Cemetery is a haven for history buffs and architecture enthusiasts. This Philadelphia graveyard was founded in 1836 and serves as the resting place of industrial leaders, explorers, sports figures, scientists, and artists. You might even spot the grave of General George Gordon Meade, one of the 40 Civil War generals buried there. About 30,000 landmarks dot the grounds, ranging from humble tombstones to ornate sculptures and massive mausoleums.
Laurel Hill Cemetery offers self-guided walking, driving, and audio tours. The events calendar occasionally features guided weekend tours, or you can book a private guided tour for groups of six or more. Have a passion for all things paranormal? Sign up for a private ghost hunting excursion!
