CYC March Fundraiser 2017

The Catholic Youth Center’s 11th Annual March Madness Fundraiser truly lived up to its name. Nearly 230 sports fans filled the Westmoreland Club, in Wilkes-Barre, to watch the Final Four teams battle in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament at this one-of-a-kind event that raised about $100,000 for the Center.

The festivities tipped off at 6 p.m. and featured the games on 10 televisions throughout the Club, basketball-themed food stations, adult beverages, a dessert bar, and a silent auction of more than 90 donated prizes. A giant-screen TV in the Grand Ballroom was the focus of many.

It was a sea of orange, as outside lights gave way to indoor rooms decorated with college basketball pennants, basketballs, floral centerpieces with mini basketballs, a game tunnel walkway, and waiters wearing referee black-and-white-striped tops.

A highlight of the night was when Father John Terry, from Our Lady of Hope Church, in Wilkes-Barre, addressed the crowd and delivered a thoughtful, motivating speech to a packed house.

The silent auction room offered high-end items like autographed sports memorabilia and designer handbags as well as moderately and modestly priced choices like restaurant gift cards, jewelry, and sporting event ticket packages. A weeklong trip to Florida, complete with Disney resort tickets, drew a lot of attention.

The evening wrapped up at 11 p.m. with the Gonzaga and North Carolina faithful reveling in their victories over South Carolina and Oregon, respectively, and auction winners heading to the valets with their arms full of their winnings. A terrific time was had by all.
