Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center
For nearly seventy years the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center has provided a solid foundation for the youth of our area. The CYC has developed the personalities, skills and future goals of thousands of young men and women.
The Catholic Youth Center “CYC” was established in 1948 by the Diocese of Scranton with a mission to serve the recreational, instructional and social needs of area youth, adults and senior citizens. For nearly 70 years the role and emphasis of the agency has evolved to meet the needs of the community. The CYC is a leader in the community in providing persons of all ages quality programs in child care, summer day camp, swimming, sports, drug and alcohol prevention, and life skills training.
The CYC is the only child care center in Luzerne County offering 24-hour a day services for working families. The agency serves children starting at the age of six months through 13 years through the child care and school-age program. For the younger children, a professionally designed age-appropriate curriculum is used for each classroom. The Center is part of the Keystone Stars program with a Star 3 rating and serves more than 100 children ages five and below. The school-age program serves students in kindergarten through the sixth grade from the following school districts: Wilkes-Barre Area, Hanover Area and Wyoming Valley West. Transportation to and from the schools is provided to all participants. There are approximately 65 children attending before school and 135 attending after school each day. As part of the child care program, all children are provided hot nutritious meals through the PA Department of Education Child Care Food Program, with more than 10,000 meals served each month.
The CYC Swim Program offers lessons for children starting at the age of three. The program’s goal is to teach each and every child the proper techniques for swimming along with water safety. While swim instruction is important for youth, it certainly isn’t the only age group that can take part in the learn-to-swim program. Each year, CYC staff members teach approximately two dozen adults how to swim. For the competitive swimmer, the CYC offers an Age Group Swim Team. This team is for ages 5 through 14 and competes in the Northeast Pennsylvania Age Group Swim League. Swimmers of all levels are eligible to join the team and no one is ever turned away based on ability. Beginning swimmers compete alongside elite swimmers. In 2015, one of their former swimmers competed at the U.S. Olympic Team qualifying meet – he missed making the team by fractions of a second.
Adult Swim Program
The CYC pool opens each morning at 6:00 a.m. to offer open swim times for adults. Many of the adults are athletes who are training for triathlons or Ironman competitions.
The CYC Basketball Program offers winter and summer leagues for children in kindergarten through high school. All leagues are divided into age groups and teams are formed with an eye towards balanced competition. The leagues stress fundamentals over wins and losses. The winter league runs from December into March each year. In the basketball “off” season, many clinics and tournaments are held. Beginning in the spring 2018, the CYC will host its’ first AAU basketball team which will represent the CYC at various tournaments.
Youth Drop In Center
A youth “drop in” program was added to the CYC in 2017. Funded with a grant from Luzerne-Wyoming County Mental Health and Developmental Services, the program offers recreational and educational programming for ages 14 through 21. Group members meet three times a week to socialize with their peers. Anyone living in Luzerne County meeting the age requirements is eligible to attend this program at no cost.
