Mission Statement

The United Way advances the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for all. Our focus is on education, income and health–the essential building blocks for a good quality of life for each one of us.

United Way of Greater Hazleton, Inc. is a nonprofit organization with headquarters in Hazleton, PA. While the national United Way movement began in 1897 in Colorado, the Hazleton branch was formed not too long after in 1928. They have had a history of fundraising and service to the community ever since.

The premise of the organization is simple, yet carries an incredible impact: concerned members of society ask businesses, individuals and professionals to join together and donate towards a financial reserve that would serve the community. That money would then be distributed to agencies in need. Today, that process is the same. Community members raise funds, volunteers distribute the money to agencies that provide the community with vital service, and additional volunteers review and account for both the dollars and the services they represent. This organization has 26 member agencies, and are collectively responsible for answering more than 150,000 instances of need in the community each year.
