The State/Local Internship Program (SLIP)

Local Internship Program Helps Students Make Meaningful School / Work Connection

Putting all that education to work

There’s no denying that a lot of learning happens in the classroom. Many college students fall short, however, when it comes to the application of that knowledge in a workforce setting. Internships play a valuable role in bridging that gap. Now, there’s a program in place to help students find crucial internships and make a meaningful link between the lecture hall and the world of work. It’s called SLIP.

“The State/Local Internship Program (SLIP) is a grant funded initiative through the PA Dept. of Labor & Industry to support internships for young adults throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.”

Building a Stronger, More Qualified NEPA Workforce

The Luzerne/Schuylkill Workforce Investment Board (LSWDB) organized the grant program with PA CareerLink offices in Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton, and Pottsville. SLIP has benefitted over 50 businesses and organizations throughout Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. In total, these organizations provided internships to 84 students. DiscoverNEPA was fortunate to welcome two very talented SLIP interns.

Discover a wealth of opportunity right here at home.

SLIP invites young workers to explore a multitude of career paths in varying fields all over the region. For employers, the program encourages students to build their careers in NEPA. Essentially, SLIP is an investment in the future of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s workforce. Similarly, DiscoverNEPA proudly shares in that mission.

DiscoverNEPA’s SLIP interns gained relevant work experience in their fields. Whether they were in the writing room, the graphic design office, or out in the field, they made the most of this amazing summer opportunity. They honed their networking skills through teamwork. They learned to manage deadlines and to develop their own professional voice.

Interns from the program also attended helpful seminars hosted by the PA CareerLink in Wilkes-Barre. There, they met other SLIP interns, shared stories, and engaged in valuable team building exercises.

Grow your roots a little deeper with an area internship.

NEPA has no shortage of driven, hardworking young adults, eager to enter the workforce. They are tuned-in to the buzz of progress that has defined the region in recent years. NEPA’s college students welcome the challenges of workforce innovation. And, at the same time, they’re not afraid to jump in and get their hands dirty on day one.

NEPA is an amazing place to live, and play. SLIP and DiscoverNEPA are on a mission to show young workers that it’s also a wonderful place to build a career.
