Widely known for its focus on caring and recognized as one of the country’s most forward-thinking health systems, Geisinger is rooted in the rolling hills and valleys of northeast, central, north-central and south-central Pennsylvania. Founded more than 100 years ago by Abigail Geisinger as a community hospital in Danville, Geisinger has expanded and evolved to meet regional needs, developing a wealth of innovative national programs in the process.

Geisinger is a healthcare system, that serves more than 3 million patients throughout 45 counties in northeast, central, north-central and south-central Pennsylvania and in southern New Jersey. The system includes 13 hospital campuses, a nearly 600,000-member health plan, two research centers and the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine in Scranton. Geisinger is known for its focus on caring and innovative programs, including the ProvenCare® best-practice approach to maximize quality, safety and value; ProvenHealth Navigator® advanced medical home; Springboard Health® population health program to improve the health of an entire community; ProvenExperience® to provide refunds to patients unhappy with their care experience; and Geisinger’s MyCode® Community Health Initiative, the largest healthcare system-based precision health project in the world. With more than 215,000 volunteer participants enrolled, MyCode is conducting extensive research and returning medically actionable results to participants.

As a physician-led organization, with approximately 32,000 employees and more than 1,800 employed physicians, Geisinger leverages an estimated $12.7 billion positive annual impact on the Pennsylvania and New Jersey economies.

In 2017, Geisinger launched Springboard Healthy Scranton, a program which focuses on issues such as diabetes, obesity and other chronic medical conditions in an economically challenged community of just under 80,000.

A cornerstone of the Springboard Health program is the Fresh Food Farmacy®, first launched in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, in 2016. The Farmacy uses a “food as medicine” approach, partnering with local food banks to provide free, healthy food to patients with certain health conditions who do not have consistent access to adequate food.
