Observe Scranton Festival Celebrates Jane Jacobs – Native Scrantonian, World-Famous Author, Lifetime Advocate for the American City

City organizations, businesses, civic groups collaborate for five days of free, informative and entertaining exhibits celebrating Jacobs and Scranton.

This week, from Tuesday through Saturday, Downtown Scranton will host a full week of events honoring the life and legacy of Jane Jacobs. The weeklong Observe Scranton Festival kicks off on Tuesday with a City Hall dedication and flag raising. Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti alongside representatives from The Center for the Living City, opened the celebration by officially proclaiming May 4th as Jane Jacobs Day. The day also marks what would have been Jacobs’ 105th birthday.

The festival continues all week with a loaded schedule of in-person and virtual community-oriented events. Enjoy, participate or just be present for book readings and signings, group discussions, informative, themed walks, First Friday events and a Light the Night Bike Ride. The weeklong festival culminates on Saturday with an always-entertaining Story Slam presented by Scranton Fringe. All events are designed to inspire and provoke mindfulness about Scranton’s history and its movement toward a better future.

The Observe Scranton Festival begins on Tuesday, May 4 and runs through Saturday, May 8.
