Plan Your Summer Fun in NEPA

We're in a Summer State of Mind

Use the extra time to research summer activities in NEPA.

We’re not sure how COVID-19 will affect our vacation plans, but luckily you don’t have to travel far from home, brave the crowds or spend tons of money to have an awesome summer. NEPA offers tons of cool destinations, from day trips at amusement parks to outdoor adventures to overnight staycations at resorts and campsites.

We won’t be stuck at home forever. But until then, give yourself something to look forward to and make a wish list of places to visit in the brighter days ahead. These vacation ideas and videos will help you get started, or you can simply chill out and tour NEPA with us from the comfort of your couch.

Book a Stay at a NEPA Resort

The famous resorts of the Poconos are just a short drive away. Plan a staycation, like a peaceful lakeside getaway at Silver Birches or a fun-filled weekend at a family resort. For a little extra pampering, check out health and wellness retreats and romantic couples’ resorts.

The best thing about staying at a resort is that all you have to do is make a reservation, and they take care of the rest. Activities, entertainment, dining, amenities… you name it, and they have it covered. Some resorts are offering special rates and deals when you book now.

Go Camping in Style

You haven’t truly experienced a NEPA summer until you’ve roasted s’mores, caught fireflies and slept under the stars. Escape into the great outdoors with a camping trip. Local campsites offer tent and RV spaces, cabin rentals and more.

If roughing it isn’t your style, try glamping (that’s short for “glamourous camping”) at the Shawnee Inn. You’ll get the top-notch service and luxury amenities of a resort with the natural beauty of a private island on the Delaware River.

Catch an Adrenaline Rush at an Amusement Park

Forget the long lines and outrageous ticket prices. NEPA’s amusement parks are a fun and affordable option for the entire family. Summer vacation isn’t complete without a trip to Knoebels, America’s largest free admission amusement park with over 60 rides. This family owned and operated park even has a campground so you can spend the night. If you purchase passes online now, you can use our deal to earn bonus cards.

Lahey Family Fun Park in Clarks Summit is another great option with mini golf courses, go karts, bumper boats, batting cages, an arcade and more that will keep the kids busy for hours.

Embark on a Wild Whitewater Adventure

Beat the heat on the rapids of the Lehigh River. Whitewater Rafting Adventures, Whitewater Challengers, Pocono Whitewater and Jim Thorpe River Adventures all offer guided rafting trips. For maximum thrills, visit on a dam release weekend, when the water is really roaring. Most outfitters also offer milder family-friendly trips that are just as fun.

Some locations also offer bike rentals, paintball, zip lining and other adventures. Call or check online for special rates and packages.

Go Kayaking or Canoeing

Take a peaceful paddle on the river with kayak rental companies like Endless Mountain Outfitters. They’ll provide everything you need, including boats, paddles, life vests and shuttle services to the launch site. Many outfitters also offer themed trips and overnight camping.

The Susquehanna and Delaware are popular kayaking destinations, especially if you plan on renting a boat. However, you can also set sail at many of NEPA’s pristine lakes, ponds and parks.

Make a Splash at a Waterpark

Stay cool this summer at NEPA’s epic waterparks, like Montage Mountain and Camelbeach. They offer attractions for all ages, from thrilling waterslides to fun splash pads to the lazy river. It’s the perfect way to squeeze in some beach time without the drive.

Go Sightseeing on a Tour

Whether you’re new to the area or you’ve lived here your whole life, you can always discover something new about NEPA. Last summer, we took a ride with Jim Thorpe Sidecar Tourz, where they showed us some of the hidden gems of the Poconos.

There’s a NEPA tour for just about every interest. History buffs will have a heyday with train rides, trolley excursions and coal mine tours. Go offroading with an ATV trip or hit the open road with Pocono Slingshot Rentals. For awe-inspiring views, try a hot air balloon ride.

Tee Off at a Golf Course

Play a few rounds on NEPA’s scenic golf courses, like Mountain Valley Golf Course in Barnesville. NEPA is home to public and private courses for players of all levels.

Check an Item Off Your Bucket List

When you’re bored at home, you get all sorts of crazy ideas, like, say, jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. Take your sense of adventure to new heights at one of NEPA’s skydiving centers, like Above the Poconos, Sky’s the Limit or Endless Mountain Skydivers. Take it from our interns, the incredible views and awesome adrenaline rush are totally worth it.

Simply Relax on Lake Time

You don’t always need an elaborate plan. Some of the best summer vacations are spent kicking back on the shore, cruising on the water and watching the sunset. As soon as you fire up the boat or light the tiki torch, you’re officially on “lake time.”

NEPA is home to stunning lakes, from the massive Lake Wallenpaupack to the quiet, placid waters of Lily Lake. Whether you prefer the amenities of a resort or the homey feeling of a vacation rental, you’ll find plenty of lodging options at lakes across the region.

And don’t forget, for all of our friends, families, and neighbors, continue observing all recommended health and safety precautions to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).
