Veteran-Owned Brewery Breathes Life into Back Mountain’s Iconic Twin Stacks Locale
There’s a long, storied history behind the fabled Twin Stacks building just off the Memorial Highway in Dallas. About 70 years ago it was a humming textile plant. Since, the red brick beauty has certainly seen its fair share of fits and starts. There was a glass company and a few restaurants. Like most handsomely refurbished, old NEPA haunts, it’s kind of just been waiting for its moment to shine. Enter Back Mountain Brewing Company.
Back in early spring, the intrepid, young couple behind Back Mountain Brewing first laid eyes on the place and knew they had to take their shot. The dream had come alive nearly a decade prior. It was borne of a homemade brew kit resembling some kind of hybrid turkey fryer/rocket ship. In between, the NEPA natives found themselves on a long, meandering road back home. The U.S Army had dropped them in just about every corner of the country. I mean, if you’re tough enough, there’s really no better way to get a free American craft beer education than on Uncle Sam’s tab. And it’s paid off… tenfold.
Of the seven staples on tap, we found quite a few standouts. The gorgeously pale Grandad’s Cream Ale hopped right up front with an intriguing, almost fruity lager bite. Little Squatchy IPA brought that true malty/piney West Coast vibe. And the Whiskey 3 Wit, though hefty for a Wit at 6.3%, cleansed the palate with refreshing sweet, spicy notes of citrus and coriander. The brewery also offers a hard cider from Brace’s Orchard, Honey Hole wines and a few select cocktails. And, if beer makes you hungry (it definitely does), they’re serving up hot slices of Dallas favorite, Bernie’s Pizza.
The newest addition to NEPA’s flourishing craft beer landscape welcomed thirsty visitors for the first time on Thursday. We happened to stop by just before they kicked open the doors. We also happened to bring our camera along for the ride. Check it out.
Back Mountain Brewing Company officially opened on Thursday, August 26. They’ll be back at it again every Thursday and Friday from 3 p.m. – 9 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 p.m. – 9 p.m. Keep your eye out for more from this unique, local brewery on the DiscoverNEPA Brewer’s Loop.
