Picture This: 6th Annual Peace, Love, Chalk Contest

Artists Add a Pop of Color to Downtown Hazleton

The Hazleton Art League hosted their annual Peace, Love, Chalk event on Saturday. Artists of all ages joined this chalk art competition outside the new Hayden Family Center for the Arts.

Each artist received a box of chalk and a blank sheet of paper to make their masterpiece. They had just five hours to bring their imagination to life. By the end of the afternoon, Broad Street was filled with all sorts of colorful creations.

Judges picked the top three winners in the adult and youth categories, and spectators voted for the People’s Choice Award. Winners in the adult category received cash prizes, while the younger artists competed for an Apple iPad and Michael’s gift cards.

Peace, Love, Chalk is a part of Hazleton Funfest. This year, the city couldn’t hold all of the usual festivities, but the art contest still provided a safe, fun way to celebrate. The reimagined Funfest activities will continue on Sunday, September 27 with a socially distant parade featuring the Quaker City String Band.

We stopped to see the artists in action. Check out these photos for a glimpse of their amazing work.
