NEPA Weekend Round-Up 11.23.18

Tackle that holiday shopping list and hit the slopes this weekend!

Be the first to try out the terrain at Montage Mountain! The ski resort opens for the season on Friday.

Keep the kids busy over the holiday break with this weekend’s fun family events. Friday is opening night for the Festival of Lights, a huge drive-through light display at Stone Hedge Golf Course. On Friday and Saturday, head to the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds for the Parade of Lights and Winterfest. Catch a historic train ride and meet Santa at Steamtown’s Holiday Express, which offers rides all weekend. On Sunday afternoon, all kids ages 14 and under receive free admission to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins home game.

Holiday shopping doesn’t have to be stressful! You’ll find the perfect gifts at NEPA’s local shops and craft sales. Starting on Black Friday, Shop Small Steamtown will offer special deals, live entertainment, and photos with Santa at The Marketplace at Steamtown. On Small Business Saturday, stop by the Midtown Village Holiday Pop-up Shops in downtown Wilkes-Barre. South Side’s Small Business Saturday event also features deals from Scranton’s local shops. For a truly one-of-a-kind gift, check out craft fairs like the Buy Local Holiday Marketplace on Sunday and the Red Cross Holiday Craft Show on Saturday and Sunday.

  • Montage Mountain Opening Day

    Dust of your ski gear and hit the slopes! Friday is the first day of the season at Montage Mountain. The crews have been making snow all week (and getting a little help from Mother Nature). Slopes open at 9 a.m.

  • Festival of Lights Opening Day

    Stone Hedge Golf Course transforms into a winter wonderland during the Festival of Lights, a huge drive-through Christmas light display. They’ll also have a vendor marketplace, bonfire and s’mores, photos with Santa, and Christmas train rides for the kids. Opening night is Friday at 5 p.m. The display will remain open until December 31.

  • Winterfest and Parade of Lights

    Ring in the holiday season at Winterfest on Friday and Saturday. The festival features ice sculpting, woodcarving, and over 60 craft vendors. The kids will love the live reindeer, horse and carriage rides, pony rides, and games. Gates opens on Friday and Saturday at 10 a.m. While you’re there, don’t miss Bloomsburg’s Parade of Lights on Friday at 6 p.m. Tons of festive floats will make their way from Geisinger Hospital to the fairgrounds.

  • Steamtown’s Holiday Express

    Steamtown’s Holiday Express is like NEPA’s own version of The Polar Express. This historic train ride travels from Scranton to Moscow. At the station, the kids can meet Santa, make ornaments, and enjoy some holiday goodies. Rides depart on Friday and Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. On Sunday, catch the train at 12:30 p.m.

  • Penguins Home Games

    Cheer on the Pens at their home games this weekend. On Saturday, they take on the Hershey Bears at 7 p.m. On Sunday, all kids ages 14 and under receive free admission as the Pens play the Providence Bruins at 3 p.m. They’ll also have a post-game skating session.

  • Shop Small Steamtown

    Score some special deals at Shop Small Steamtown, a holiday shopping event hosted by the Marketplace at Steamtown. Support Scranton’s small businesses and check out live entertainment from local bands and theater groups. Santa will be there for photos with the kids. Doors open at noon on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

  • Midtown Village Holiday Pop-up Shops

    Small Business Saturday marks the opening day for the Midtown Village Holiday Pop-Up Shops. Over a dozen local crafters, artists, and retailers will set up booths at the Midtown Village shopping district in downtown Wilkes-Barre. The shops open at 10 a.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday. The market continues every weekend until Christmas.

  • South Side's Small Business Saturday

    South Side’s Small Business Saturday event makes it easier than ever to finish your holiday shopping. Pick up a free map and tote bag from any of the participating businesses and explore Scranton’s local shops. The South Side Farmers’ Market will also offer special deals. The event starts at 10 a.m.

  • Buy Local Holiday Marketplace

    The Scranton Cultural Center hosts the Buy Local Holiday Marketplace on Sunday. All five floors of the theater will be filled with booths from 120 artisans, crafters, and small businesses. Pick up some wine, jewelry, accessories, home décor, fine art, children’s gifts, pet items, and more. Doors open at 11 a.m. The first 1,000 shoppers receive a free reusable shopping bag.

  • Red Cross Holiday Craft Show

    The Red Cross is hosting their 24th Annual Holiday Craft Show at the Kingston Armory on Saturday and Sunday. Over 150 vendors will offer jewelry, clothing, glassware, wine, soaps and lotions, décor, and more. Everything is handmade, so you’re sure to find that special gift. Admission benefits the Red Cross Eastern Pennsylvania Region. Doors open at 9 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday.

  • The Clairvoyants Christmas

    The Clairvoyants are the mind-blowing magicians who won second place in season 11 of America’s Got Talent. Now they’re making a stop at Mount Airy Casino on Friday. The show starts at 8 p.m.

    The Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble is performing The Wizard of Oz, a beloved classic that’s fun for all ages. The play opens on Saturday with shows at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Shows continue every weekend until December 29.

  • Berwick Santa Parade

    On Friday morning, the streets of Berwick will be filled with floats and performers at the Santa Parade. The parade starts at Crispin Field on Mulberry Street and makes a loop around town. It steps off on Friday at 10:30 a.m.

  • Volunteer Workshop at Griffin Pond Animal Shelter

    Lend a paw to Griffin Pond Animal Shelter this Sunday at their Volunteer Workshop. They’ll be making dog treats and cat toys for the animals. The event is free, but donations of peanut butter and toilet paper/paper towel rolls are appreciated. The workshop starts at 1 p.m.

    Join Blue Ridge Estate Vineyard and Winery for their Lighting of the Vineyards on Saturday. The fun starts at 5 p.m. with live music and food vendors. At 8 p.m., kick back with a glass of wine and watch a dazzling display of Christmas lights in the vineyards. Admission is free.
