NEPA Weekend Round-Up 05.03.19

Nothing says spring like a cold mint julep and the sweet smell of cherry blossoms.

Kick off the first weekend of May with NEPA’s springtime festivals. Churchill Downs doesn’t get to have all the fun this weekend. The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono is hosting live harness racing at Kentucky Derby Day on Saturday. West Pittston will be filled with pink petals and beautiful blooms during their Cherry Blossom Festival on Saturday and Sunday. Join the Cherry Blossom 5-Mile Run to see the gorgeous trees at Kirby Park on Sunday.

Everyone’s eager to get outdoors and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Hop on the Bike Train on Saturday or Sunday to catch some stunning views. You’ll take a scenic train ride to the top of the Lehigh Gorge Trail, then bike 25 miles back to Jim Thorpe. On Saturday, kick back under the night sky at Owl Calling and Star Gazing at Hillside Farms.

Take a stroll through Scranton and explore all that the Electric City has to offer. Check out live music, art exhibits, and local shops during First Friday Scranton. On Saturday, hit up ten of downtown Scranton’s pubs and test your Dunder Mifflin knowledge at The Office Trivia Bar Crawl.

With so many local treats, NEPA brings out the inner foodie in all of us. Sample your way around Pottsville during the first Food Truck Friday of the season. Fill your fridge with fresh, local produce at the opening day of the Monroe Outdoor Farmers Market on Saturday.

  • Kentucky Derby Day

    Place your bets, put on your craziest hat, and order a mint julep! Mohegan Sun Pocono brings a little taste of Churchill Downs to NEPA during Kentucky Derby Day on Saturday. The horses take to the track for a double-header of live harness racing. They’ll also have a champagne brunch, hat competition, and photo booth. The party begins at 11 a.m.

  • West Pittston Cherry Blossom Festival

    Celebrate spring at the 48th Annual West Pittston Cherry Blossom Festival on Saturday and Sunday. This family-friendly festival kicks off with a parade on Saturday at noon. Both days feature games, children’s activities, live music, and food vendors along the river. The festival kicks off at noon each day on Susquehanna Avenue near the Firefighters’ Memorial Bridge.

  • Cherry Blossom 5-Mile Run

    Jog through a sea of pink petals at the Cherry Blossom 5-Mile Run at Kirby Park on Sunday. The park’s cherry trees will be in full bloom. They’ll also have a one-mile fun walk if you’d rather stroll and take in the views. The starting gun goes off at 10 a.m.

  • Bike Train at the Lehigh Gorge Trail

    From the rails to the trail, explore the Lehigh Gorge on the Bike Train on Saturday or Sunday. You’ll board the train with your bike in Jim Thorpe and take a scenic ride along the Lehigh River. The train will drop you off at the White Haven trailhead, and you’ll pedal 25 miles down the Lehigh Gorge Trail. Along the way, snap some photos alongside the waterfalls, canal ruins, railroad trestles, and scenic overlooks. The train leaves at 9 a.m. each day.

  • Owl Calling and Star Gazing at Hillside Farms

    Spend the night under the stars at The Lands at Hillside Farms on Saturday. You’ll take a wagon ride to the pastures, where you’ll get the best views of the night sky. You’ll also learn to call owls and even get some hoots in reply. The event starts at 8 p.m.

  • First Friday Scranton

    First Friday Scranton puts the spotlight on NEPA’s local talent. Twenty-nine shops, restaurants, and galleries will host art exhibits, live music, and theater performances. Discover the downtown district’s creative side on foot or hop on the trolley shuttle. The art walk begins at 5 p.m.

  • The Office Trivia Bar Crawl

    Binge watching all those episodes is finally going to pay off. Show off your knowledge of all things Dunder Mifflin at The Office Trivia Bar Crawl on Saturday. Gather a team of up to eight people and visit ten of Scranton’s downtown bars and pubs. They’ll have drink specials, awards, and a prize for the best dressed team. The crawl starts at 4 p.m. at the Irish Wolf Pub.

  • Food Truck Friday in Pottsville

    Downtown Pottsville is holding their first Food Truck Friday of the season this weekend. Food trucks will set up shop throughout the business district. While you’re there, take a stroll through town and check out the cool local businesses. Food Truck Friday begins at 5 p.m. and will be held every first Friday through September.

    The Monroe Outdoor Farmers Market opens for their 40th season on Saturday. Pick up fresh produce, honey, dairy products, eggs, meats, bread, baked goods, and more. The farmers market opens at 8 a.m. and continues every Saturday through October.
