East Stroudsburg’s Hot Spot for Cheesesteaks

Fat Mikey’s Cheese Steaks in East Stroudsburg has made a name for itself as one of the most popular lunch stops in the Poconos. We popped into the busy sandwich joint this week to see exactly why locals just can’t stop lining up for these delicious cheesesteaks and more.

First, we chatted with owner Jelani Douglas about what makes Fat Mikey’s a mid-day go-to for so many NEPA locals. For Douglas it was all about bringing something creative yet classic to East Stroudsburg. Of course, Fat Mikey’s has your traditional cheesesteak with gooey-cheese, peppers, and onions. One quick look at the menu, however, and you’ll find the secret to Fat Mikey’s success — innovative twists on old favorites, unique toppings and creative combinations. Cheesesteaks are Douglas’ passion. And that couldn’t be more evident than in the line of familiar faces he greets at almost every lunch rush. Aside from slingin’ steak and cheese all day, Douglas’ favorite aspect of the business is serving his amazing East Stroudsburg community.

Ok. Let’s talk cheesesteaks. We went straight for the three most popular menu items. First, we took on The OG — a classic featuring thinly-sliced steak with a generous helping of cheese and that Fat Mikey’s staple — Cheez Whiz (South Philly style). The gooey cheese brought together the perfectly cooked steak and soft, fresh roll in a sticky, savory mess of deliciousness.

Next, we moved into chicken cheesesteak territory with local favorite, the Auntee Dee. Again, that fresh, soft Italian hoagie roll provided the foundation. Then, they piled on a mountain of freshly grilled chicken, fried peppers and onions, crispy lettuce and juicy tomatoes. And the whole thing lay comfortably underneath a warm blanket of melted provolone. They’re right. It’s fire. We hear you East Stroudsburg.

Finally, we got to the showstopper, the Fat Mikey Cheesesteak. This gorgeous pile of steak comes adorned with crispy fries, spicy siracha mayo and, of course, that South Philly finisher — Cheez Whiz. All of it just comes together perfectly in a heavenly blend of spicy, cheesy, carb-y goodness. It was probably enough for four.

It’s no secret that Fat Mikey’s masters the cheesesteak game. But if you’re shopping around, you’ll also find a wide selection of sandwiches, appetizers, and milk shakes. There’s a little something for everyone! And, if you mention DiscoverNEPA while ordering, you’ll receive 10% off when you spend $20 or more.

Fat Mikey’s is located at 214 North Courtland Street in East Stroudsburg. Be sure to check them out on Instagram and Facebook for new menu items.
