Let’s Do Lunch: Cara Mia’s Delicatessen

Over 25 Years of Delicious Lunches and Family Traditions

For over 25 years, Cara Mia’s has been a go-to for NEPA’s lunch crowd. When it comes to fresh, deli-style sandwiches, soups and more, Cara Mia’s has it covered. We stopped by the popular, Dunmore hotspot to get our hands on some of their famous mozzarella and so much more.

First, we chatted with Chris Lowe, son of owners’ Chris and Cara Lowe about what makes Cara Mia’s such a local gem. Lowe emphasized how much dedication and attentiveness goes into every menu item. It’s a testament to his parents’ drive to ensure their customers receive only the best. To this day, the couple spends every working moment in the Cara Mia’s kitchen. For Lowe, it all comes down to family traditions. And none of those traditions are more evident than in their famous homemade mozzarella. The recipe dates back 80 years to Cara’s Italian grandfather.

Naturally, that’s precisely where we started. Up first, the Cara Mia Classic — delicately roasted red peppers, that incredible mozzarella, spinach and pesto mayo, with a pile of eggplant parm on a fresh hoagie roll.  It was the perfect place to start. You can get it as completely vegetarian, or add Cara Mia’s delicious chicken parm.

It kind of felt like a soup day. And that’s where we went next. First, we opted for a classic — Chicken Noodle Soup (another Cara Mia’s favorite). The tender chicken and perfectly proportioned noodles and veggies offered that needed home-cooked comfort. Then, we tried the Red Pasta Fagioli. It came loaded with fresh veggies swimming in a perfectly seasoned broth.

Of course, you can’t have soup without a sandwich. We tried the Flank Steak Sandwich. It was stuffed with beautifully grilled steak, tomatoes, shredded lettuce and garlic mayo on a Kaiser role. Finally, we tried the Southern Turkey Sandwich that packs quite a bit of spice. Don’t underestimate the hot Italian peppers and the Cajun mayo. The welcome addition of Swiss cheese, lettuce, and tomato definitely help to balance the flavor and the heat.

Cara Mia’s is located at 210 E Drinker St in Dunmore, PA. Be sure to check out their Facebook and Instagram pages to stay in the loop on specials and menu items.
