Dominican-Style Fast Food Comes to Downtown Wilkes-Barre
Bocados Wonder Foods opened their doors in June and brought a taste of authentic Dominican cuisine to Wilkes-Barre. This restaurant serves snacks, sandwiches and more, just like you’d find at a New York City food truck.
Bocados is owned by the Almonte family, who previously had a catering business in the Dominican Republic. When they came to Wilkes-Barre, they realized that there weren’t many places that served fast foods like empanadas, quipes, chimi and yaroa. They decided to fill that gap and create a place where people could find quick, casual bites.
We stopped and tried some of their specialties, like the Chimi Wonder. This Dominican sandwich includes coleslaw, tomato, onion, cheese and your choice of beef steak, smoked ham or chicken. Another favorite is the Pica Pollo, which is chicken that’s marinated in garlic adobo and deep fried to crispy perfection.
Bocados makes classic burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches too. We tried their popular Club Sandwich Deluxe, a triple-decker sandwich stacked with chicken, bacon, ham, cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo on toasted bread.
As for sweets, Bocados makes all-natural fruit juices and shakes. Their Morir Soñando (which literally translates as “to die dreaming”) is a heavenly drink with a cool, creamy blend of orange, vanilla and milk. Bocados also has delicious desserts like homemade flan. Check out our exclusive deal to get a free dessert when you spend $25 or more.
Bocados Wonder Foods is located at 509 South Main Street in Wilkes-Barre. They’re currently open for in-house dining and takeout. Delivery is available through DoorDash.
Now that restaurants are back open, we have a lot of lunch dates to make up. In this series, we’re visiting cafés, sandwich shops and more across NEPA and giving you an inside look at what they have to offer. Take your lunch break with us and show your support for our local restaurants.
