Let’s Do Lunch: Big Dan’s BBQ & Catering

Catawissa’s Ultimate BBQ Spot

Nothing says summer like delicious BBQ shared with good company in a laidback atmosphere. Luckily, as the weather warms up, Big Dan’s BBQ in Catawissa has all of the above. Owner and pitmaster Dan Bosworth opened his BBQ joint in 2013. What started out as a small trailer on the roadside of Rohrbach’s Farm Market has expanded into a full-blown restaurant. In April 2021, Dan moved his business into the market’s barn loft. With just two months in the books, business and an appetite for incredible BBQ have already been booming.

Dan is self-taught in the art of BBQ, a passion that grew out of his own backyard. “Friends always wanted to come over and have BBQ,” he explained. Now, friends from all over the country, as evidenced by the pinpointed map on the wall, visit Big Dan’s for great food and fun times.

When we stopped in for lunch, Big Dan’s staff prepared a complete BBQ feast. Of course, we had to try a fan favorite: a brisket sandwich with sides of baked beans and coleslaw. As Dan explained, this is customary Texas BBQ. With the ultimate smoky flavor, it does not get more classic than this meal combination.

You can’t go to a BBQ spot without testing out their ribs. At Big Dan’s you can choose between a half or full rack of the “Woah Baby Back Ribs.” These tender, fall-off-the-bone ribs don’t miss. We also ordered a side of the “Mac & Jack,” which is Dan’s homemade mac & cheese. It made the perfect cheesy pairing with our savory half rack.

For a truly traditional option, go for “The Original Pile Up.” First, you choose between pulled pork, pulled chicken, or brisket. Then baked beans and coleslaw are piled on top. We decided on the pulled pork, as well as sides of kettle chips and fresh cornbread. This has to be one of the most authentic ways to experience Big Dan’s BBQ.

Big Dan’s covers everyone’s favorite BBQ dishes, but they serve up some more unconventional options as well. For example, the “Bro’s Nachos” add your choice of delicious smoked meat to a heap of tortilla chips. Cheese, pico de gallo, sour cream, and BBQ sauce complete the pile. This is the perfect shareable dish for a night out with family and friends. Or better yet, keep them all to yourself.

Big Dan’s BBQ is located at 240 Southern Drive in Catawissa, PA. Enter through Rohrbach’s Farm Market and head upstairs to find the restaurant. You can order to-go or dine in the newly renovated space. Keep up with Big Dan’s BBQ through their website, Facebook, and Instagram.
