When Major League Soccer kicked things off in 1996, Philadelphia did not have a team representing the City of Brotherly Love, despite its status as one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States.

Known for its legendary teams and hardcore fans, Philly would never pass up an opportunity to show off some athletic prowess. It took twelve years to get things off the ground, but in 2008, the Philadelphia Union was signed into the MLS. Two years later, the Union played their first matches in the League, and you can bet Philadelphians took them under their wings.

Now, 15 years after its founding, the Union has joined the ranks of the Eagles, Phillies and 76ers as a symbol of Philadelphia. These days, if you want to call yourself a true Philly sports fan, you’ve got to get out to a Union match.

Luckily, Subaru Park is only a two-hour drive, give or take, from NEPA. Not only will you catch a high-energy game, but you can make a whole day out of it. So, don your snake and shield gear and practice those iconic cheers and chants for an evening of fast-paced fun.

Philadelphia Union home games typically take place on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays with start times rotating between 7:30 & 9:00 p.m. The season lasts from late February through early October, but there’s no denying that spring and summer matches hit different.

Parking at the stadium is made efficient and easy, especially with the ability to purchase passes in advance. All lots are within walking distance to the stadium, some even leading you on a stroll along the scenic Chester Riverfront. Each lot provides access to different highways and interstates, so be sure to check descriptions before making your choice.

Learn the power of the “doop.”

Lots open 5 hours before kickoff, so there’s more than enough time to party prior to the match. For the full Philadelphia Union experience, you’ll want to hang out in Lot E with the famous Sons of Ben. As the official supporters of the club, the Sons have been hyping the Union since day one. And they’re always happy to welcome new fans into the fold.

You can purchase tailgate tickets on the Sons of Ben website before game day, just be sure to memorize a few chants while you’re at it.

Fuel up for kickoff with good eats.

General Admission to Subaru Park opens one hour prior to kickoff, giving fans the chance to buy all the Union merch and hit all the concessions. Throughout the stadium, you’ll find 15 stands and 25 portable carts serving a wide selection of foods and drinks.

Is it even a Philly sporting event without a bucket of Chickie’s & Pete’s Crabfries? Philip’s Steaks makes sure visitors hit their cheesesteak quota. And if you’re in the mood for a bit of everything, P.J. Whelihan’s has a variety of classic bar foods to mix and match throughout the game.

Make the most of halftime.

Any soccer fan knows that matches get intense quick. By halftime you’ll likely be on your feet cheering, chanting and maybe even heckling (respectfully, of course) the referee.

It’s time to take the edge off…with some ice cream. Head to Scoops ‘N’ Smiles and go crazy with a few of their fancy flavors. And if you need something a bit stronger, the Heineken Bar will make sure you’re ready to take on the second half.
