Inaugural Run & Walk Will Benefit Camp Freedom

Benchmark Mortgage will present the first-ever Hometown Heroes 5K Run & Walk at Kirby Park. The event on June 11 will recognize local veterans and first responders, as well as raise funds for Camp Freedom.

The course will begin at Kirby Park and follow the Luzerne County Levee Trail.

“The location is perfect because it’s very centralized, it’s accessible for all fitness levels and it’s off the road. There’s no traffic, so it’s safe,” said Shaun Daney, race organizer and business development manager at Benchmark Mortgage.

After the turn-around point, participants will continue on the lower road at Nesbitt Park for a very special section of the course: the Hero Mile. Local members of the military, firefighters, police officers, EMS squads and community organizations will bring their vehicles and line the route.

“I think it creates a unique section for runners, but it’s also amazing for spectators that want to bring their kids to see the firetrucks or engage with some of the local heroes that we’re honoring,” Daney explained.

This year’s event will benefit Camp Freedom, a nonprofit in Carbondale that provides outdoor adventures for disabled veterans, first responders and their families. Through activities like hunting, fishing and more, participants have the chance to experience the healing and peace that only happens in the outdoors.

The Hometown Heroes 5K welcomes all ages and skill levels, whether you’re aiming to run your PR or you just want to come out for a walk with your family.

“It’s a great opportunity for the community to come out, show support for our local heroes, help us raise money for an amazing cause and really engage with some of those organizations that are onsite,” said Daney.

Registration is open now through June 8. For more information, you can visit the Hometown Heroes 5K website and Facebook page.
