As part of our DiscoverNEPA Brewer’s Loop Series, we’re hitting the road – yes, all 390-plus miles of it. We’ll be taking brewery tours, sampling stouts, lagers and IPAs, and tasting taproom grub all over Northeastern Pennsylvania. Follow along as we bring you a firsthand look inside the region’s exploding craft beer scene, and let you know how, when and where you can experience it for yourself.

Northeastern Pennsylvania and Beer at its Best

Somewhere near the middle of the Endless-Pocono Run section on the DiscoverNEPA Brewer’s Loop, and just off the northeastern corner of Lake Wallenpaupack, you’ll find this popular Pocono destination’s namesake brewery. Hawley’s Wallenpaupack Brewing Co., now in its second year, is becoming one of the region’s most recognizable craft breweries.

It helps, of course, to have a stable of delicious, award-winning beers at your disposal. Throw in a beautifully-appointed, industrial-chic brewpub and some classic beer friendly grub and you have so much more than your average brewery. You have a modern craft beer destination. Let’s head up Route 6 and check out Wallenpaupack Brewing Co.

Friends, Food, Beer and not a TV in Sight

Connect with friends, family or even the strangers around you.

There’s a purposeful interaction at play in the pub side of the Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. With massive windows lining the entire building, visitors can’t help but welcome the outside in. Natural light floods the space, spilling over finished wood tabletops onto the polished concrete floor. It bounces along with echoes of delightful conversations against the corrugated steel wainscoting. That famous, dense Pocono greenery sways in a lake breeze outside every window. The back and forth of the natural elements with the stylishly industrial décor pairs neatly with the laid-back, European beer garden vibe.

Behind the rugged bar another window the size of a movie theater screen directs a glimpse into the brewery. Stainless steel barrels, symmetrical piping and an overall calming sterility pervades the exquisitely framed scene. And the eye brings it all together in a swirling notion that nature belongs in this place despite these objects meant to transform it. It calms, and cajoles conversations from strangers. It swims in the monstrous silver tanks, and it is poured out into your glass.

The Beer

Clean, simple, approachable.

Taste your way through the beer spectrum from light to dark, sweet to bitter, cream ale to stout. The folks at Wallenpaupack approach brewing with a workman’s attitude. There is little pretension in their craft, and the end result is pure artistry. The ingredients are simple and almost always Pennsylvania grown.

Their typical draft list offers a beer for every palate. A great place to start is the flagship Cream Ale – a light, crisp and flavorful ale that drinks like a lager. Then, hop it up a bit with the clean, citrus finish of the Largemouth IPA. They also crank out some tasty fruit beers and shandy’s. And if you favor the dark side, try their famous Pocono Porter or deep, chocolatey Stout. You can even try their handful of beers that swept through the PA Farm Show’s first annual beer competition. And if you have the opportunity, don’t miss their PA Preferred Legacy Award-Winning Wet Hop Farmhouse Saison.

Don’t forget to take a few home with you. At the brewery, you can also pick up your favorite beer to go in cans, crowlers and growlers.

And you thought that delicious beer was all you needed.

A menu designed for beer lovers by beer lovers.

It’s very simple. Good beer goes great with certain foods. And Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. has put together a menu that complements every beer they make. Pair their IPAs with wings, cheesesteaks and vegan-friendly black bean burgers. Try a stout and some stuffed portobello mushrooms, or a lager and their famous spent grain pretzels. You can spend a whole day here sampling food and beer combinations. My advice – bring friends, lots and lots of friends.

You can also bring the kids. Wallenpaupack offers a children’s menu featuring all of the classic favorites. They also carry a wide selection of Hank’s Gourmet Sodas.
