CEO Thanksgiving Program

Everyone Deserves a Full Plate on Thanksgiving

Before you carve the turkey and slice the pumpkin pie, take a moment to serve others at the CEO Thanksgiving Program.

Preparing a Thanksgiving feast is hard enough, but for families dealing with hunger, it can be difficult just to afford an order of groceries. The Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO) and the Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank want to make sure that no one has an empty dinner table. Every year, their Thanksgiving Program provides local families with everything they need to make a holiday meal.

The CEO Thanksgiving Program is the largest holiday food distribution in the area. Last year alone, the program served 7,223 families from Luzerne and Lackawanna counties and distributed over 400,000 pounds of food. This year, they expect to surpass those numbers, and they can only do it with the help of volunteers like you.

It takes a team of 1,200 volunteers to make it all possible.

This year’s program takes place in the former Sears store in the Wyoming Valley Mall. Preparations begin weeks in advance until the empty store starts looking more like a warehouse full of food. Then it’s all hands on deck for the Food Distribution Days, which are held on the weekends leading up to Thanksgiving.

No matter what your age, no matter what your talents, you’ll find a spot where you can help out. Volunteer to spend a fun and fast-paced day filling shopping carts with frozen turkeys, fresh produce, and nutritious snacks for those in need. Or maybe you have the energy and enthusiasm to be a “runner” who helps people to their cars and loads their trunks. Other volunteers assist with registration, parking and traffic.

When we all come together, we can make the holidays brighter for families all across the Valley.

This year marks the 40th Annual CEO Thanksgiving Program. Embrace the season of giving and make this amazing community event part of your Thanksgiving traditions. Groups are welcome (it makes a great service project for students, Scout groups, teams and clubs), or simply round up some co-workers, friends and family.

Volunteer opportunities are also available leading up to the distribution event. On Family & Kids Day, little helpers ages 12 and under can come lend a hand. Groups can sign up for Bag Prep Days on weekdays by appointment.

CEO holds additional distributions in Hazleton and Tunkhannock. There are also opportunities to prepare and deliver hot meals to homebound individuals on Thanksgiving Day.
