Each year, Junior Achievement of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Inc. (JANEPA) holds a spirited fall fundraising event to support its curriculum, which benefits more than 11,000 local K-12 students. Live music and laughter fill the air at the JA Mericle Family Center for Enterprise Education, as funds are raised to teach entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and work readiness year-round. Area restaurants, caterers, wineries, and breweries provide food and drink tastings while guests bid on silent auction prizes and vie for raffle and other prizes.
In November 2017, longtime radio DJ Frankie Warren, of Magic 93, served as the emcee for the Taste of Success event, calling out auction and raffle winners.
Food samples ran the gamut from frisee salads by Wolfgang Puck Express, sesame soy noodles and pulled meat sliders from The Atrium, roasted pumpkin bisque from Constantino’s Catering & Events, mulligatawny soup from The Pierce Street Deli, gourmet macaroni and cheese from Fire and Ice on Toby Creek, premium oils, olives, and vinegars from Thirteen Olives, and boneless bites from Chick-fil-A, to name a few.
Guests washed down all of that delicious food with complimentary wine from Harvest Seasonal Grill & Wine Bar, Bartolai Wineries and others. For the beer lovers, plenty of samples were provided by Banko North and the Susquehanna Brewing Co. Callahan’s Café and Coffee House provided some much-appreciated coffee.
Crafty bidders took advantage of the expansive assortment of silent auction items, including a basket of Pinnacle flavored vodka bottles, a six-month family membership to the YMCA, overnight stays, a golf package, tickets to sporting events, and so much more.
The food and drinks were great, the entertainment and silent auction were a lot of fun, but the stars of the evening were undoubtedly the incredible raffle baskets. Some basket themes included Mr. Coffee, candles, gift wrap, Coca Cola, Proctor & Gamble, Thanksgiving, Gertrude Hawk Chocolates, wine, jewelry, and Miller Lite. Those lucky enough to take one home were ecstatic.
Though not everyone in attendance was fortunate enough to take home a raffle basket or silent auction prize, every guest left with a smile, a full belly, a host of new friends and a renewed sense of hope that through the contribution of their time and resources, Junior Achievement of Northeast Pennsylvania will continue their good work with the young people of the region.
