Start the Year Right with Winter Sports, Live Entertainment and New Adventures This January
The new year presents the perfect opportunity to explore. Luckily, NEPA has plenty of places to see and things to do, even in the middle of winter. Set an adventurous mood this January with the help of local events. From 5Ks to food and wine festivals, live shows to outdoor excursions, you might just find yourself a new favorite hobby.

January Events in NEPA

Resolution 5K Run/Walk
January 1
Kick off the year the right way with a 5K. The Resolution 5K begins at The Columns Museum and traverses a flat residential road. The course’s scenic route makes the perfect setting to reflect on 2022 and set intentions for 2023.

2023 Paupack Polar Plunge
January 1
Dive into 2023 with an icy cold dip into Lake Wallenpaupack. Take your plunge before warming up by the fire with some great food, music and more winter activities. Proceeds benefit the Lake Wallenpaupack Dive & Rescue Teams.

First Day Hikes
January 1
Get out into nature with groups of fellow hikers for guided tours of some of NEPA’s most beautiful parks. Lackawanna, Beltzville and Nescopeck State Parks host First Day Hikes on New Year’s Day.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins
January 4, 6-7, 18, 20 & 28
Help the birds start 2023 with some wins at Mohegan Sun Arena. Matches against the Charlotte Checkers, Hartford Wolfpack, Syracuse Crunch, Lehigh Valley Phantoms and Bridgeport Islanders mean the home team needs all the support they can get.

First Friday Scranton
January 6
Spend the first Friday of 2023 with local businesses, musicians and artists in downtown Scranton. Stop in your favorite restaurants and shops to catch live performances and peruse pop-up galleries.

Food & Wine Festival
January 7
Spend an afternoon sampling artisanal wines and cheeses at Skytop Lodge. Featuring local wineries, cheese makers and live entertainment, this festival is a dream come true for fine wine connoisseurs. This event is complimentary for Skytop guests and $20 for non-resort attendees.

The Underground Experience
January 7, 21 & 28
Go underground at Blue Ridge Winery for an unforgettable experience. In the estate’s chic tasting room, guests will be treated to world-class wines and gourmet snacks. Be sure to book in advance, tickets go quickly.

Disney on Ice presents Let's Celebrate
January 12 – 16
Featuring more than 50 beloved characters from all your favorite Disney and Pixar films, the whole family will feel the magic at Disney on Ice. Head to the Mohegan Sun Arena for this whimsical performance.

Shiver by the River
January 14
Hit the new year running at Shiver by the River. With 10K and 5K runs and a 2-mile walk option, everyone is welcome to participate. Scranton Running Company hosts this annual event to get the community out and moving this winter.

ShiverFest
January 14
Brave the cold and kayak down the icy Lackawanna River at LRCA’s ShiverFest. End your 3-mile adventure at Sweeney’s Beach and head to Lace Works Tap & Grill to thaw out.

Sherman Winter Craftfest
January 14 & 15
The 4th Annual Sherman Winter Craftfest brings more than 70 of the area’s artists and craft vendors together at the Sherman Theater. Craftfest admission is free to the public, so take some time to browse the unique selections all weekend.

May We All - A New Country Musical
January 20-22 & 27-29
From Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley, this new musical combines the art of theatre with beloved country hits. Ovation Playhouse presents the story of a small town coming together over their love of music and community.

The Disco Biscuits
January 20 & 21
This Philadelphia-based band hits the stage at Penn’s Peak for an evening of “trancefusion.” Combining electronic and jam band music, The Disco Biscuits’ sound is entirely unique and still fresh after 30 years.

Superunknown - The Music of Chris Cornell
January 21
Quickly becoming the premiere Chris Cornell tribute band, Superunknown covers every era of the rock legend. From Soundgarden to his solo career, you’ll hear all your favorite hits and discover a few hidden gems at Mauch Chunk Opera House.

Pocono Winter Beerfest
January 21
Local breweries gather at the Sherman Theater for Pocono Winter Beerfest. With more than 100 hand-selected craft brews, guests will be treated to the best of the best.

Winter Wine Under the Waves
January 21
The Electric City Aquarium and Reptile Den hosts Winter Wine Under the Waves, an evening of world-class wine and delicious food from local wineries, restaurants and vendors. Besides refreshments, the night will be filled with live music, raffles and, of course, a few scaly friends.

Dragons and Mythical Beasts
January 26
Uncover dark secrets as magnificent monsters and beasts traverse the F.M. Kirby Center stage. From trolls to unicorns, and maybe even a dragon, audiences will come face to face with mysterious creatures at this award-winning show.

Anastasia
January 27 – 29
Based on the beloved Disney film, Anastasia tells the century-old myth of the lost Russian royal. The story of adventure and family is brought to life as this Tony Award-winning musical comes to the Broadway Theatre of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Us and Floyd: The Pink Floyd Experience
January 28
These professional musicians and lifelong Pink Floyd fans strive to give audiences the closest experience to the real thing as possible. Covering a good portion of the band’s vast catalog, expect to hear the hits alongside some deeper cuts at Mauch Chunk Opera House.

Breakfast with the Princesses
January 29
Have a magical morning at Skytop Lodge. Young princes and princesses will meet their favorite heroines at Breakfast with the Princesses. After a delicious meal, guests will enjoy sing-alongs, story times, face painting, photo ops and more.
